Whales Today LIVE

Whales Today LIVE: Celebrating the beauty, behavior, and vulnerability of whales through music and dance. Contemporary dancers from Tilted Collab will interpret the New Bedford Whaling Museum's exhibition "Whales Today." The dancers' improvisational movements will be set to evocative original music commissioned by the Whaling Museum and composed by Simon White, Sean Fennessey, and Thomas O'Leary. An exclusive talk with the artists follows the performance. Explore the exhibition galleries throughout the evening and enjoy delectable eats by Morton’s Fork Catering (cash bar) during the pre-performance reception beginning at 6 pm. New Bedford Folk Festival

The Zeiterion Theater presents the 24th Annual New Bedford Folk Festival from Saturday July 6 through Sunday July 7, 2019 with an impressive lineup of the best in contemporary, Americana, traditional, blues and Celtic folk music. This year the festival includes Grammy Award winning Cajun band BeauSoleil avec Michael Doucet, Dar Williams called “one of America’s very best singer-songwriters” by The New Yorker, folk, jazz, and pop songstress Susan Werner, blues masters Chris Smither and Guy Davis, old-time and American roots music trio Molsky’s Mountain Drifters featuring Grammy-nominated fiddler Bruce Molsky, cutting edge Celtic band Bua and many more. The festival runs from 11 AM to 9 PM both days and is located in the Zeiterion Performing Arts Center and throughout the 11 blocks of historic downtown New Bedford and the Whaling National Historical Park in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Through June 22, tickets are $125 for a weekend Premium Pass (limited quantity), $30 for a weekend pass and $22.50 for a single day pass. Starting June 23, prices are $140 for a weekend Premium Pass, $40 for a weekend pass and $30 for a single day pass. Children under 12 are free. Thousands of people from New England and across the nation attend the festival over the weekend, making it a major destination for this summer weekend. This year’s festival promises an exciting and memorable celebration which shows the city of New Bedford at its best. The lineup of performers for the 2019 festival includes: Beaucoup Blue, BeauSoleil avec Michael Doucet, Bon Débarras, Bourque Emissaires, Bua, Gerry Colvin Trio, Laura Cortese and the Dance Cards, Guy Davis, Kevin Doyle, Seth Glier, Raymond Gonzalez, Livio Guardi, Anne Hills, David Jacobs-Strain, Bill Jones, Diana Jones, Pete and Maura Kennedy, Mike Laureanno, Zoë Lewis, Radoslav Lorković, Low Lily, Ryan McKasson, Eric McDonald and Jeremiah McLane, Pamela Means, Molsky’s Mountain Drifters, The Nields, Chris Pahud, Dan Plews, Sol y Canto with Alisa Amador, Chris Smither, Liz Stringer, Art Tebbetts, Matt Watroba, Susan Werner, Don White and Dar Williams. All performers are subject to change. The festival presents a major juried arts and crafts show which is open to the community and features artisans and crafts makers lining the cobblestone streets between the performance tents and venues. They include jewelers, instrument makers, tie dye and caricature artists, local honey purveyors, handmade health and beauty products, pottery and more, representing a rich culture of handmade wares from the Southcoast region and beyond. A food court features a variety of food vendors including the justifiably world famous New Bedford landed fish and scallops. The New Bedford Folk Festival is supported in part by a grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.

Inspired by the graceful, synchronous motion of schools of fish, Patrick Shearn’s signature Skynets are a constant reminder of nature moving around us. The forthcoming installation for DATMA’s Summer Winds exhibit will dramatically reveal the coastal wind currents moving throughout New Bedford, that are hardly visible otherwise. The artist will pursue a site-specific design for Custom House Square in order to maximize both the drama and intimacy of the artwork
