OCHM Book Group: The Amistad Rebellion: An Atlantic Odyssey of Slavery and Freedom by Marcus Rediker Join us for a friendly discussion with a group of people who love to read and discuss good books. Scheduled to meet monthly on the second Saturday, newcomers are always welcome to join the group. For February we’ll be reading The Amistad Rebellion: An Atlantic Odyssey of Slavery and Freedom by Marcus Rediker. The rebellion on the Spanish slave schooner Amistad became one of the best-known events in the history of American slavery, celebrated as a triumph of the legal system in films and books, all reflecting the elite perspective of the judges, politicians, and abolitionists involved in the case. In this powerful and highly original account, Marcus Rediker reclaims the rebellion for its true proponents: the African rebels who risked death to stake a claim for freedom.

OCHM Book Group: "The Flight of the Sparrow" by Amy Belding Brown Join us for a friendly discussion with a group of people who love to read and discuss good books. Scheduled to meet monthly on the second Saturday, newcomers are always welcome to join the group. For May we’ll be reading "The Flight of the Sparrow" by Amy Belding Brown, a novel of historical fiction, which tells the story of Mary Rowlandson, an Englishwoman captured by Natives during King Philips War. All her life, Mary has been taught to fear God, submit to her husband, and abhor Indians. Now, having lived on the other side of the forest, she begins to question the edicts that have guided her, torn between the life she knew and the wisdom the natives have shown her.

OCHM Book Group: "Book of Ages: The Life and Opinions of Jane Franklin" by Jill Lepore Join us for a friendly discussion with a group of people who love to read and discuss good books. Scheduled to meet monthly on the second Saturday, newcomers are always welcome to join the group. For April we’ll be reading "Book of Ages: The Life and Opinions of Jane Franklin" by Jill Lepore. It is a life that has never been examined before: that of the sister of one of the most remarkable men of their time, living unknown to the world at large, but a constant presence and influence in her brother's life through their correspondence (he wrote more letters to her than to anyone else). Making use of an astonishing cache of little-studied material, including documents, objects, and portraits only just discovered, Jill Lepore brings Jane Franklin to life in a way that illuminates not only this one extraordinary woman but an entire world. Lepore's life of Jane Franklin, with its strikingly original vantage on Benjamin Franklin, is at once a wholly different account of the founding and one of the great untold stories of American history and letters.
