The 4th annual New Bedford Jazz Fest is set to kick off on Saturday, June 13, and this time, with some veterans and some not-so-obvious acts set to hit the stage. Of the unique acts this year, New Bedford Native, Candida Rose and the Women in World Jazz group (an all female jazz ensemble) will be performing “KabuJazz.” KabuJazz is a combination of Cape Verdean musical roots and American influences that bring a new take on World Jazz music. The only way to truly understand the feeling behind KabuJazz is to listen to her debut album entitled, “KabuMerikana: The Sum of Me.” The album showcases her unique and captivating voice that combines the overtones and undertones of jazz, rhythm and blues, and gospel with just the right touch of international spice.

Looking for the perfect Valentine’s Day “spa experience” this year? Look no further than Melanie’s Day Spa in Taunton. Located on 111 Dean St., Taunton, MA – Melanie’s Day Spa has made a name for itself as the premiere day spa in town. Twelve years ago, owner, Melanie Sinclair decided to pursue her passion for skin care and esthetics; she opened the doors to Melanie's Day Spa a year and a half ago. “There is competition in the area, even right next door, but I think our clients see the passion and personalized attention we give to them in their treatments, and that’s what sets us apart.”
This past weekend (Fri. & Sat, Jan. 16 & 17) the Narrows Center for the Arts (5 Water St., Fall River, MA) hosted its 2nd Annual Winter Blues Festival. Two nights filled with 13 hours of music, from 9 notable bands. If you aren’t familiar, the Narrows is literally a hidden gem of the Fall River waterfront, amidst a block of historical treasures. It’s tucked behind a local bar adjacent to Battleship Cove, a national maritime museum harboring the USS Massachusetts among several other U.S. naval battleships. Luckily though, I didn’t have to listen for the music to find my way to the festival; I was with a local who happens to be a Blues Music enthusiast and long-time Narrows patron.
For 10 years Medaesthetic Day Spa has held its residence at 1402 Tucker Rd. in Dartmouth, MA. Under the creative direction and ownership of Kathy Leavitt, Medaesthetic Day Spa has been offering some of the most sought after wellness treatment services in the region. “It’s all about constantly taking opportunities to learn the most about your craft. Staying relevant and finding new approaches to age-old wellness treatments is what helps keep me and the staff energized, and passionate about what we do,” Leavitt told me as she offered me up a seat in one of the spa’s single massage rooms. She shut the door behind us, and then got comfortable propping herself up onto the massage table.

If you’re on the hunt for a standout gift for a serious vintage wear hunter, a fashionista that knows how to bargain, than look no further than Sak’s Consignment on 147 Swansea Mall Drive #4 in Swansea, MA. Nearly hidden in plain sight, Sak’s Consignment is located right across the street from the Swansea Mall, and is sure to offer you something you won’t find for your loved one anywhere else. The store has been in business for 6 years and has managed to keep a rather low profile among shoppers in the region. And any thrift shopper who knows how difficult it is to get a legitimate piece of high fashion for a steal knows that secret treasures like this one don’t stay a secret for long. So, we hate to say that after today we might be responsible for letting the cat out of the bag. Sorry, not sorry.
As holiday lights start to fade, there's still one final bash to illuminate the way into 2015. New York may have the ball dropping in Time Square, but Southeastern Massachusetts should not be counted out of the race when it comes to stellar New Year’s Eve experiences. From swanky soirees to family friendly fun, there are a number of different events and venues to choose from; all tailored to you. So get to one of these events, and join in on the revelry. For the Party Animal:
With the Christmas holiday nearing in less than ten days, it’s safe to say the streets are flooded with procrastinating gift-givers scrambling to find that perfect gift for their “loved one.” Now, we’re not judging! It can be nearly impossible to find the time to really sink into the shopping spirit. The obvious place to start your search would be your local shopping center, but a face-off among the deluge of agitated holiday drivers in the gauntlet known as the mall parking lot, or scaling the aisle shelves for the last Minecraft video game all seem counter productive for a successful Holiday gift haul.
